The Madison Fire Department extinguishes a pile of garbage Monday after an Advanced Disposal truck started on fire.

Fire begins inside garbage truck near University Avenue

While an Advanced Disposal garbage truck was traveling south down Lake Street, a fire started inside the vehicle Monday just before noon.

The truck pulled inside the parking lot for UW Extension, on the northwest corner of Lake Street and University Avenue. The truck dumped the on-fire garbage load in the parking lot. Two Madison Fire Department trucks arrived on the scene and quickly extinguished the fire, according to an MFD fireman.

No official report had been made about the cause of the fire, but one witness on the scene said a garbage man put a smoldering piece of debris into the back of the vehicle, which started the fire.

Madison Police Department also arrived on the scene, shutting down traffic going south on Lake Street.

No injuries were reported.
