Associated Students of Madison held their first voter registration event Monday at Memorial Library to attract student voters.
ASM students will set up tables four days a week until Oct. 19., where they will register students to vote and provide them with information to prepare for the November election. According to ASM Vote Coordinator Billy Welsh, ASM is doing these events to inform students on the importance of voting.
“Student engagement is so important,” Welsh said. “Often, students don’t vote at as high of rates as the rest of the public. We also want to register people early because the lines on election day are going to be so long. We want to make voting as convenient and accessible as possible.”
Monday registrations will be held in the first floor west corridor of Memorial Library, Tuesdays at Gordon Commons, Wednesdays at College Library and Thursdays at Dejope Dining Hall. ASM students will staff tables Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
According to Welsh, ASM’s goal is to register 5,000 students. As of Monday, they have registered more than 2,000. They are going to hold large-scale events later in October, as well as early voting for students with absentee ballots Oct. 31 until Nov. 1 at Union South.
