Madison Police Department officers responded to reports of shots being fired on the 2700 block of McDivitt Road Wednesday morning that resulted in at least one man getting shot.
The male victim, who is in his 20s, sustained life-threatening injuries and is being treated at a local hospital, according to an MPD incident report. The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, and he was later found shot in the street, according to officials.
“At least two bullets hit a nearby apartment building, but there were no reported injuries inside,” MPD Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain wrote in the report. “Detectives believe the victim was specifically targeted and that this was not a random act of violence.”
MPD has recovered more than 25 shell casings so far, and said the preliminary investigation shows that more than one gun was fired. Leopold Elementary School was put on “lock down” as a precaution.
The Wisconsin State Journal reported MPD was unsure if the incident was gang-related or if multiple shooters were involved. DeSpain did say that the investigators are receiving cooperation from multiple witnesses.
MPD updated the incident report Wednesday afternoon to note that there is "no longer any imminent danger to those working or living in the area of the shooting."
