Republican Party gives Green leadership position

By: Megan Corbett /The Daily Cardinal  - February 27, 2007

Mark Green was named the new National Committeeman for the Republican Party Monday, nearly three months after losing to Gov. Jim Doyle in the Nov. 7 gubernatorial election. Green will replace former Committeeman Terry Kohler, who has held the position since 2002. He will work closely with the party’s National Committeewoman, Mary Buestrin, to promote the GOP agenda.

The Republican Party of Wisconsin Chairman Brad Courtney praised Green, saying he would be a key asset in maintaining a Republican White House and reclaiming majorities in Congress and here in Wisconsin.

Kristen Kukowski, a spokesperson for the Republican Party, said Green’s experience “will be a great asset to the party” as it looks ahead to 2008.

“I am excited for the opportunity to further my efforts to promote the Republican principals of limited government and greater freedom,” Green said in a statement.

“Our party has a strong message that is a stark contrast from the tax increases we’ve already seen from Democrats in Madison and Washington this year,” he said.

Green’s experience includes a position as a U.S. Rep. for Wisconsin’s 8th district, which he relinquished in order to run for governor in the last election. He also served on the Wisconsin state Assembly from 1992 to 1998. Green currently works for the Godfrey and Kahn law firm in Green Bay, where he helps Wisconsin companies create jobs.

Concerning Green’s political future, Kukowski said the appointment “definitely leaves the door open.”
