Summer Book Recommendations

“A Thousand Splendid Suns”

by Khaled Hosseini

After the success of his debut novel “The Kite Runner,” Khaled Hosseini follows up with another eye-opening novel, “A Thousand Splendid Suns.” The book tells the tale of Mariam and Laila, two women who bond over the agony they face living in tumultuous Afghanistan. Hosseini encapsulates the turmoil of a war-ridden country as well as the societal struggles of women belonging to a patriarchal society. “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is both compassionate and educational, a tale of hope rising amid great despair.

“Falling Man”

by Don DeLillo

One of the most astonishing photographs is of a man who jumped or fell from the North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001. Renowned novelist Don De Lillo goes back to this horrific incident on one of the most tragic days in history in his latest “Falling Man.” The story circles around the family of Keith, a lawyer and survivor of the attack, and the ways in which each family member copes with the tragedy. Keith becomes a professional poker player, and his estranged wife Lianne builds up anger toward anything Islam and is also captivated by the image of Falling Man. De Lillo also tells the story of Hammad, one of the hijackers on the plane that struck the North Tower.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”

by J.K Rowling

Our favorite wizard is back in J.K Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series. After much anticipation, Rowling holds nothing back and is sure to end the series with a big bang. “Deathly Hallows” is set for release July 21.
