Badger Bits

 

 

The Badger women's volleyball team traveled to Ohio State and Penn State over the weekend and returned with a victory and a loss. UW defeated 10th-ranked OSU Friday 30-24, 27-30, 30-22 and 30-28. Sophomore outside hitter Lisa Zukowski suffered a knee injury in the first match.  

 

 

 

On Saturday, the women attempted to end their losing streak in State College, Pa., but again came up empty-handed. UW, previously undefeated in the Big Ten, lost three of five matches to the Nittany Lions with scores of 20-30, 28-30, 30-23, 30-26 and 15-9.

The Wisconsin men's hockey team proved itself to a sell-out crowd of 11,547 as it defeated North Dakota 3-2 Friday night on the road. Junior goaltender Scott Kabotoff earned his first win as a starter as seniors Dave Hergert, Kent Davyduke and Andy Wheeler each racked up points for the Badgers.  

 

 

 

Despite its win against the Sioux Friday, UW could not sweep the series, instead splitting it with a 6-4 loss Saturday night. Freshman goalie Bernd Bruckler came up with 36 saves. Sophomore Rene Bourque, seniors Andy Wheeler and Matt Murray and junior Brad Winchester each scored for the Badgers. Wisconsin falls to 1-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and 2-2-0 overall. 

 

 

 

 

 

The sixth-ranked Badger women's hockey team returned from Ohio State this weekend with a win and a tie to add to its record. Friday, the Badgers cranked out a 6-0 victory over the Buckeyes, with sophomores Meghan Hunter and Karen Rickard and freshman Molly Engstrom scoring power-play goals.  

 

 

 

The women faced OSU again Saturday night but allowed three power-play goals, two of which occurred in the third period, holding the game to a tie. Junior Kerry Weiland scored for the Badgers on a power-play goal in the first period. Rickard and sophomore Stephanie Boeckmann also scored for UW. The Badgers are now 3-0-1 in the WCHA and 4-0-2 overall.  

 

 

 

 

 

The UW Men's Cross Country team defended its conference championship in Champaign, Ill., with a final score of 28 points. Twelfth-ranked Michigan placed second with 71 points, followed by Michigan State with 94 points.  

 

 

 

Redshirt freshman Matt Tegenkamp placed second in the 8,000-meter run in 23:23.2, with redshirt freshman Josh Spiker right behind him, coming in at 23:49.8 and junior Isaiah Festa following with a time of 23:50.9.  

 

 

 

The women's cross country team took third with 106 points, behind only Michigan State and Michigan. Junior Bethany Brewster placed first in the 5,000 meter with a time of 17:02.7.  

 

 

 

Other scorers for the Wisconsin women included sophomores Michelle Lillenthal and Hilary Edmonds, placing 10th and 13th, respectively.
