Gubernatorial hopeful suggests legislation to clean up campaigns

U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett, D-Wis., a candidate in next year's Wisconsin gubernatorial race, pledged Monday to appear in all of his campaign ads in an effort to encourage cleaner campaigning.

Barrett and state Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, proposed legislation that would force every candidate for office to 'stand by your ad,' the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

This legislation, which Barrett is also pushing on the national level, would require candidates to identify themselves and the office they are seeking whenever one of their advertisements mentions or depicts an opposing candidate, the State Journal said.

'This proposal forces political candidates to take personal responsibility for the things they say about their opponents,' Barrett said in a press conference.

A similar measure was passed last year in North Carolina.
