Reported India hijacking proves to be erroneous

A widely reported Wednesday hijacking of a Boeing 757 en route to New Delhi from Bombay turned out to be a false alarm.

Air traffic controllers in the city of Ahmediabad took an anonymous call earlier in the day about a hijacking before alerting the pilots of the state-owned Alliance Air jet.

After pilots locked the cockpit, thinking the hijackers were in the passenger cabin, they landed the jet safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport at about 1 a.m.
