The UW women's track team took a break from the scheduled Drake and Penn Relays to participate in the UW-La Crosse Classic Saturday. The team dominated the meet, coming home with first place.
Junior Tara Clack set Wisconsin's record in the pole vault at 12'6\ while sophomore Bree Fuqua took the shot put with an outdoor personal best of 49'. Senior Cathy Ross performed well, winning the triple jump at 41'3"".
The Badgers also excelled at distance. Sophomore Hilary Edmondson took second place in the 800-meter run, as senior Bethany Brewster finished right behind her.
The men's track team competed in the Drake Relays over the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, and brought back a few top-10 finishes. Junior Isaiah Festa took second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase and participated in the distance medley that earned fifth place, along with freshman Gustin Smith, junior Jabari Pride and freshman Matt Tegenkamp. Wisconsin also did well in the sprint medley relay finals, as senior Pierre Leinbach, junior B.J. Tucker, freshman Jvontai Hanserd and freshman Dan Murray sprinted to a sixth-place time of 3:24.17.
Wisconsin's three rowing squads faced tough competition and even tougher weather Saturday, en route to a top performance at the Midwest Championships. Wisconsin boats won 10 of the 13 events on Lake Wingra.
In the premiere events of the day, the men's and women's Varsity Eight events, the Badgers prevailed in both. The No. 5 UW men's team crossed the line in first, clocking a 6:12 in the 1850-meter course. UW vanquished a determined University of Dayton squad by 23 seconds, with Big Ten foe Northwestern finishing a distant third.
In the women's Varsity Eight race, the Wisconsin openweight squad narrowly defeated the No. 1 UW Lighweight Eight in a time of 7:02.
Although they rallied hard, the men's tennis team could not get past Ohio State Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Badgers (3-9 Big Ten, 9-13 overall) stole the lead early in the match, with two wins to earn the doubles point. Senior Scott Rutherford and sophomore Scott Green defeated OSU's Adrain Bohane and Paul Warkentin 8-0. Freshman Alex Kasarov and sophomore David Hippee sealed the point for UW with a win over OSU's Brenton Contini and junior Phil Metz. However, the Badgers did not fare as well in the singles competition, as only senior Danny Westerman and sophomore David Hippee earned wins for UW.
In the Big Ten final, Illinois defeated Minnesota 4-1 to take the title.
The Badger Herald's red hot lumber warmed up Saturday's wind-chilled, rain-drenched afternoon at Vilas Park, as the BH handily crushed to the Daily Cardinal by a final score of 6-1.
Herald Sports Editor Lars Russell began the festivities with a line-drive base hit to left field off the hand of Cardinal hurler Matt Worzala.
News Content Editor Morgan Felchner followed with an infield single to set up BH hitter Zach Fehrenbach's smash, which cleared the bases and set the tone for the afternoon.
Despite their best efforts, the Cardinal sluggers managed only two shots over the heads of the Herald infield during the contest.
Second baseman Alexander Conant, fearless leader of the BH troupe, turned in a clutch performance, going two-for-two in the cleanup slot.
