Badgers fall at Big Ten Tournament finals

The UW women's tennis team (10-4 Big Ten, 16-8 overall) ended its successful season with a loss to No. 1 Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament finals Sunday.

On its way to the Big Ten title match, UW bypassed Indiana, 4-2, Friday. Wisconsin lost the singles point, as the Hoosiers defeated the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions, while the No. 3 contest was abandoned. However, the Badgers reacted quickly and won four of their five singles matches, with wins from junior Linde Mues, sophomore Shana McElroy, freshman Katie McGaffigan and senior Katie Dougherty.

Saturday, the Badgers continued their trek to the finals with a 4-3 win over the Michigan Wolverines.

The beginning of the match mirrored that of Friday's, as the Badgers lost the doubles point in the two matches played.

But the Badgers showed the same tenacity as in previous matches, taking four of the six singles matches to earn the win. Senior Vanessa Rauh, McElroy, McGaffigan and freshman Lindsay Martin all earned points for the Badgers.

The win over the Wolverines would be the last for the Badgers, as they dropped their final match to Northwestern, 4-1, Sunday.

The Badgers lost the doubles point, and Martin was the only Badger to pull off a win in the singles competition.
