Following months of debate over the naming of the UW Institute for Environmental Sciences, the governor's office finalized the decision Thursday and it will now be called the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies.
The former governor and state senator was suggested for the dedication because of Nelson's enthusiastic involvement in saving the Wisconsin wilderness and as the founder of Earth Day.
Controversy arose, however, when UW officials argued that to raise funds for the university, the dedication of the institute should be offered to a benefactor. Nelson is expected to be present at the bill signing.
