The Madison City Council will meet tonight to elect its leadership for the next year.
Current president pro tem Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, is pitted against Ald. Matt Sloan, District 13, for the office of president, while Ald. Linda Bellman, District 1, is running unopposed to fill Verveer's position as pro tem.
The council president, typically elected once for a one-year term, has the power to set council agendas, run council meetings in the absence of the mayor and appoint members to the ethics board.
\I'm pretty confident I have more than enough votes to be elected,"" Verveer said.
The council will also accept the report of the Committee on Committees, which Verveer said recomends combining many of Madison's committees to form a more efficient government.
""It's very difficult to delete or merge any of the dozens of city committees we have,"" he said.
