The possibility of additional public parking in the downtown became more concrete yesterday as a proposal supporting the construction on a mid-State Street parking ramp, unanimously passed the Madison Transit and Parking Commission.
The ramp will be located at the current location of the city-owned parking lot adjacent to Pizzeria Uno, 222 W. Gorham St.
This was the last city committee this \comfort resolution"" had to pass before it is heard before the City Council on May 7, according to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4.
""This resolution puts the council on record that we support the creation of additional public spaces in that block,"" he said. ""And secondly it creates a committee to work out all the details.""
The committee will need to deal with problems ranging from increased traffic to the probable destruction of downtown housing, Verveer said, but added he was optimistic that construction would begin by the fall of 2003.
""My purpose in creating the committee was to try to get the various issues worked out in an expeditious manner,"" he said.
