Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, the current U.S. health and human services secretary, will not attempt to reclaim his old job this fall.
Thompson, who served as governor for 14 years before being nominated for the Cabinet position, announced his intention to stay in the nation's capital during his visit to Fitchburg for a biotechnology conference Friday.
\I'm not running,"" he said. ""I made a commitment to the president.""
Rumors have placed Thompson as a potential gubernatorial candidate following his timid endorsement of current Gov. Scott McCallum, Thompson's former lieutenant governor, along with a phone survey in the state that asked residents whether they would support another run by Thompson.
""I think he's doing good,"" Thompson said of McCallum.
