Evidently, things used to be a lot cooler back before I went to college.
The term \drink specials"" used to mean something other than shelling out $7 for watered down vodka tonics at State Street Brats, so you and the sorta good-looking girl in your Bio class could feel awkward around each other.
UW-Madison used to allow beer to be sold at football games so that students could just use their fake ID's instead of smuggling flasks of Admiral Nelson into the game. Hey, at least the UW used to make money off the beer sales instead of money going to those ""dangerous"" liquor proprietors, eh Chancellor Wiley?
But my biggest grievance with the present vs. ""back in the day"" is the fact that UW athletics has the grotesque motion ""W"" as their official logo. Prior to '94, the UW used a prestigious and praiseworthy block ""W"" in cardinal and white coloration. Post '94 the university switched to the motion ""W."" Now, I realize that this will take some time as well as ...sigh... effort to change.
But it is for the best. If one looks at that damn ""W"" from an aesthetic point of view, one realizes the lack of appeal. Merely looking at the thing inspires not toughness but the idea of a cartoon. Yes, the swooshing curves instead of inspiring fear into the hearts of opponents, inspires visions of that poor Wild E. Coyote chasing that infernal Roadrunner down strips of western highway. One can almost hear the Badgers respectability say, ""Beep. Beep."", as schools with cooler emblems get the blue chip recruits, big money grants and big time respect.
