State educates hunters on CWD

Wisconsin is taking a proactive step toward the education of residents in regard to the chronic wasting disease that has infected the state's whitetail deer population.

According to Gov. Scott McCallum a random sampling of 100,000 licensed hunters in Wisconsin will receive a brochure listing facts about the disease along with phone numbers and Web sites where they can receive more information.

The disease ravages the brain of the deer, leaving it sponge-like, causing the deer to lose weight and eventually die. More than 1,000 deer have been slaughtered in attempts to contain the problem.
