Wisconsin is taking a proactive step toward the education of residents in regard to the chronic wasting disease that has infected the state's whitetail deer population.
According to Gov. Scott McCallum a random sampling of 100,000 licensed hunters in Wisconsin will receive a brochure listing facts about the disease along with phone numbers and Web sites where they can receive more information.
The disease ravages the brain of the deer, leaving it sponge-like, causing the deer to lose weight and eventually die. More than 1,000 deer have been slaughtered in attempts to contain the problem.
An additional 80,000 pamphlets, created by Whitetails Unlimited and the State Tourism and Natural Resources departments, can be picked up at Wisconsin Travel Information centers, DNR service centers, and other related places.
