Thompson to vote for brother, endorse McCallum

Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum received Health and Human Service Secretary Tommy Thompson's endorsement for governor Friday, but Libertarian candidate Ed Thompson may receive his vote Nov. 4.

Thompson, who served as governor for 14 years before taking the Cabinet post in President Bush's administration in 2001 showed support for his former Lt. Governor at the \Rally for Wisconsin's Economy"" in Milwaukee.

""Scott McCallum has the vision, the strength of character and the experience to do what is right for the people of Wisconsin'on the economy, on the education and on health care,"" he said. ""Scott has offered our families a clear, forward-looking agenda that doesn't place an undue burden on tax payers.

Ed Thompson however said that his brother had promised to support him personally when it came down to election day and was surprised by the secretary's announcement. Tommy Thompson has not revealed to the public who he will receive his vote.

""I thought it might be the first case of chronic wasting disease in the state when he did that,"" Ed Thompson said, but added he did not especially crave his brother's endorsement.

The fundraiser for McCallum was attended by more than 300 people from multiple groups such as the Wisconsin Builders Association and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. Also in attendance were U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Janesville, numerous state senators and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker.

Tommy Thompson attacked McCallum's Democratic gubernatorial opponent, state Attorney General Jim Doyle for his proposed budget plan.

""If you believe Jim Doyle won't raise your taxes, then I have bridge in Elroy to sell you,"" he said.

Ed Thompson said he hoped to do well despite the lack of support from his brother.

""I think [Minnesota Gov. Jesse] Ventura opened it up a lot when he proved that a third party candidate can win,"" he said. ""I don't want special favors from anybody. Not from Tommy Thompson, not from anybody.""

McCallum said he was grateful for his former compatriot's backing and added that he would continue to build upon the state's success under Thompson.

""The Thompson-McCallum administration ushered in an unprecedented era of prosperity and growth for the people of Wisconsin,"" he said. ""And I'm more than ready to continue fighting for reforms that empower working families, keep taxes low and create the jobs that make for a vibrant economy and a vibrant state.\
