Youseef Sawan's article on U.S. \imperialism"" is remarkable for one reason only: it is totally devoid of original thought.
Every other week, Mr. Sawan chants tired leftist mantras in the Cardinal; after reading the headline, one need not read the rest of the article to know what comes next. America's right to defend herself from the Talibans and Husseins of the world is not tantamount to creating an empire, an absurdity that Mr. Sawan asserts with nothing in the way of evidence.
Does Mr. Sawan really believe the main purpose of global monetary institutions is to plunder Burkina Faso of its natural resources and force it to adopt lasseiz-faire capitalism?
As a Keyensian liberal, I question the economic policies of the IMF and the WTO, and these institutions themselves are reevaluating their failed models of development. The fact that development is not always successful does not imply some underlying venality.
The United States has had strategic military forces in Japan and Germany since World War II, and the Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schroeder, opposes intervention in Iraq. President Bush has yet to depose him and replace him with an Army General. Remarkable restraint for an Emperor to allow such disquiet from his minister abroad.
By continuing to publish such vapid claptrap, the Cardinal diminishes its seriousness as a newsdaily.
