With just over a month left in the college football regular season, many teams are still fighting for the right to play for the national championship. The BCS computers determine the top two teams, those teams will play for the national championship.
With the top six teams in the BCS standings currently holding undefeated records, heated controversy about which two teams should have the right to play for the national championship may loom on the horizon. Multiple teams may have undefeated records. Fiesta Bowl President John Junker foresees a possible BCS mess to occur, as teams compete for the right to play for the national championship.
\Are there things that make us nervous? Yeah,"" Junker said. ""There could be three, four or five undefeated teams out there. One of the things we hope for is less controversy.""
Less controversy would mean that of the six undefeated teams, four would have to lose at some point in this final portion of the football season. However, the way that these competing teams' remaining schedules shape out, there could easily be at least three undefeated teams at the end of the regular season.
Georgia Bulldogs: Ranked fourth in the latest BCS polls. Perhaps the greatest barrier still confronting the Bulldogs is their SEC arch nemesis the Florida Gators. Florida has in the past always had Georgia's number, however this year may be different as Georgia hopes to continue their quest for an undefeated season. Surviving this weekend and barring upsets, Georgia has a legitimate shot to run the table and finish undefeated.
Miami Hurricanes: Last year's national champions, the Miami Hurricanes have struggled at times this year yet still remain undefeated. Ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings, the toughest remaining game for the 'Canes is their hugebattle with currently undefeated Virginia Tech. This game, which will be played at Miami, will be crucial for it very well may determine one of the teams to compete at the Fiesta Bowl.
Notre Dame Fightin' Irish: Surprising everyone with their solid defense and opportunistic offense, the Irish have one tough test remaining in front of them. The Irish will take on their nationally ranked arch rival USC on the road in the final game of the regular season. Surviving that game, the Irish could very well play for the national title.
Ohio State Buckeyes: Ranked No. 5 in the BCS standings, this Big Ten powerhouse plays many of their tougher opponents on their remaining schedule at home. Spoiling Ohio State's national title dreams and undefeated season may come from Ohio State's most heated rival, Michigan. The last game of the season, the Wolverines will head into Columbus, and Michigan would love to break the Buckeyes' heart, ruining their undefeated season.
Oklahoma Sooners: Head Coach Bob Stoops has led his squad to an undefeated season thus far. Already beating prior-undefeated Texas, Oklahoma's remaining schedule appears very favorable. Their toughest task may come this weekend as nationally ranked Colorado takes on the Sooners in Norman, Okla. Assuming the Sooners can survive this weekend and avoid any upsets, Oklahoma could very well tally an undefeated season.
Virginia Tech Hokies: Playing consistent football all-around, the Hokies head into November undefeated and have no really tough games until December. However, once December comes around Virginia Tech must head south to take on currently undefeated Miami at the Orange Bowl. This game has national title ramifications written all over it.
Almost all of these teams have legitimate shots to go undefeated and play for the national title. If more than two of these teams are undefeated at season's end, college football chaos will ensue. Notre Dame's Head Coach Tyrone Willingham fears this situation for any of the teams which may be undefeated at the end of the season.
""If you are one of those teams, you will be screaming bloody murder ,"" Willingham said.
Controversy or not, the remainder of the college football season looks to be both dramatic and exciting, as the national contenders battle it out to keep their perfect seasons alive.
