Safety a right for all students

In the past two months, two sexual assaults have occurred at Madison West High School. Does this seem like a problem to anyone else?

After each of the assaults, changes were promised. However, I question how many changes could have been made when the second assault happened only two months later. Madison School District spokesperson Joe Quick stated, according to the Nov. 25 Badger Herald article, that it is impractical to provide a safe environment for all 2,000 students at West.

We have been taught since kindergarten that a safe learning environment is one of the basic rights of any student at any institution. And yes Mr. Quick, it is impossible to keep an eye on every single one of those 2,000 students at all times.

That is why administrators, teachers, principals, everyone at those schools should focus on the root of the problem--the idea that it is ok to assault a woman, the idea that women are playthings for men to use and abuse any way they deem necessary. This idea that sexual assault is acceptable needs to be changed. If the mentality is changed, the fact that it is impossible to keep an eye on all 2,000 students will not be a problem.
