The UW men's hockey team (2-11-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 8-15-3 overall) was swept out of Colorado in a two game series against the Tigers of Colorado College.
Friday night saw the Badgers drop a tough 4-2 decision to CC as junior winger and Badger killer Peter Sejna scored his eighth career goal in 10 games against the Badgers.
Junior forward Rene Borque notched two points Friday night, scoring Wisconsin's first goal and assisting on freshman forward Ryan MacMurchy's goal.
Saturday night saw a ferocious offensive attack from Colorado College. The Tigers posted five goals on the hapless Badgers and proved why they are the No. 3-ranked team nationally, winning the game 5-0.
The loss was marked by UW's disappointing power play extending its futility to 0-37 in power play chances. With the two losses UW has now sunk into a tie for ninth place in the WCHA.
The UW men's tennis team met Northern Illinois Friday night at the Nielsen Tennis Center. The men came out victorious in their dual season opener winning 4-3.
Junior Dave Hippee, freshman Ward Bortz and freshman Jeremiah Fuller gave the team three points by winning their singles match-ups.
Hippee teamed up with junior Alex Kasarov against Juan-Pablo Barriga and Erick Martinez, winning 8-6.
Although the Jordan Raemisch/Scott Green team did not win their match, senior Blake Baratz and freshman Alex Conti went to work, won 9-8 and UW took home the doubles point and the win over the Huskies.
The men will be home again this week to take on DePaul on Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. in the Nielsen Tennis Center.
The University of Wisconsin women's track and field team won six events at its own Wisconsin Elite Invitational held Saturday in the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The Badgers took on Arizona, Indiana State and Marquette in the nonscored invitational.
Junior Hilary Edmondson recorded the first NCAA-qualifying mark of the season for the Badgers when she won the mile. She crossed in a provisional mark and personal best time of 4:46.35. Senior Bethany Brewster finished third in the mile in 4:51.08 while sophomore Linsey Blaisdell was fourth in 4:58.75.
Freshman Tara Halls won the 600 meters in 1:36.02 while the other Badger winners came in the field events. Wisconsin athletes swept the long and triple jump with junior Yael Peled claiming the long jump at 18-6 and senior Julie Stefan winning the triple jump at 38-9. Peled finished second in the triple jump with a personal best of 38-2 ??. Junior Bree Fuqua won the shot put with a season's best throw of 49-1. Redshirt sophomore Courtney Bauer finished second at 45-11 ??.
Other notable performances came in the 60-meter hurdles, where freshman Melissa Talbot finished third in 8.96. Her time ranks 10th on the UW all-time list. Sophomore Katie Kolpin finished third in the 800 meters in 2:13.95. In the 4x400 meter relay UW finished in third place overall.
