The City Council Tuesday night approved a transport plan created by the joint city, county and state Transport 2020 committee. The report calls for new park and ride lots, expanded Madison Metro Service and the creation of a commuter train between East Town and Middleton.
The plan is estimated to cost $242 million for initial construction and equipment and $40 million annually in operation costs.
According to Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, the city's next step will be to secure federal funding to help offset costs of implementing the plan. Currently the city has not decided how it will pay for its share of the cost.
\There are many years ahead before we see [the plan] come to fruition,"" he said.
The report passed by a vote of 14 to 3 with one abstaintion.
