Fast food's newest hits & misses

Along with the new semester comes a bevy of new flavors from fast food chains. So once again, The Daily Cardinal gives you the skinny on fast food's latest and greatest.

A dollar can buy a lot more than it used to. At least that's what the friendly folks from Burger King would like customers to believe with their not-so-unique 99 cent Value Menu.

The food offered on BK's new menu is reminiscent of closeout-priced apparel at a post-holiday sale. Instead of hideous Santa ties and wool socks, however, diners at Burger King can indulge themselves with neglected edibles from the far reaches of the BK menu.

As one would expect, most items on the Value Menu aren't really much of a value. The chili is constructed of leftover burger meat and a wretched sauce that tastes like ketchup gone horribly wrong. There are hardly any beans in the chili, but it's probably better that way. The meat and sauce will have folks looking for the nearest toilet anyway.

Burger King's onion rings don't fare much better. Far too salty for any flavor to come through, they're a far cry from the greasy rings Grandpa used to get at the bowling alley.''

One semi-bright spot on the BK Value Menu is the baked potato. Well-seasoned with chives right inside the potato, it tastes fairly decent.

Sadly, the grilled sourdough burger was the best item on the Value Menu but has since risen to the above-one-dollar price range. The tasty combo of BK grilled beef, mayo and decent bread was well worth 99 cents, but not $1.29.??

Apparently a dollar isn't worth that much, after all.

Dave Thomas used to do a good job of offering his customers a wide variety of food. Wendy's has a more varied menu than most of its competitors, offering everything from the basic cheeseburger to baked potatoes and chili.??But Wendy's latest special sandwich, the Bacon Swiss Burger, is nothing special.

This is a sandwich they have had before, and it's nothing more than the regular hamburger with two extra ingredients.

Even if you are a huge fan of bacon and swiss cheese, this sandwich will not impress you.

If you're at Wendy's, you should stick to the 99 cent menu.??You can't go wrong with a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger or a five piece chicken nugget, and who doesn't love a Frosty'Wendy's has disappointed the fast food world this time and hopefully their next effort will be a little more than mediocre.??Here's some advice, Wendy's: Bring back the pitas!

Every so often, McDonald's comes along and presents millions of hungry mouths with a new reason to salivate: the New Tastes Menu.??Many customers love the New Tastes Menu, which features a few new items that are not usually found at McDonald's.

The Grilled Chicken Flatbread is the current sandwich featured. It is a soft, pita-like bread that is wrapped around grilled chicken, onions, cheese, lettuce, and tomato, and garnished with a special sauce.??Initially the sandwich seems appetizing with its pleasing aroma.??Once the actual eating begins, however, it becomes clear that this ""new taste"" needs to quickly be replaced.?? Although the chicken has a nice texture, it is smothered in an excess of pepper.??The cooked onions are perhaps the most palatable ingredients inside the sandwich but the lettuce and tomato are typical of McDonald's--wilted and unripe.??In similar fashion, the cheese leaves much to be desired.??The flatbread itself is the only thing that keeps this sandwich from being a total disaster. Although some people might enjoy the tangy sauce, it tasted suspiciously similar to the tartar sauce on McDonald's fish filet.?? Hmmm...perhaps not all tastes on the menu are entirely ""new"".??

Subway has a great new way to eat healthy and still enjoy delicious subs.??If you have not tried all seven subs that contain a mere six grams of fat, you should. Along with these seven which include turkey, roast beef, veggie delight and roasted chicken breast, come two more scrumptious sub creations: ""Red Wine Vinaigrette Club"" and ""Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki."" These sandwiches not only taste great but they are low in fat and can be purchased as a Fresh Value Meal, which includes a soda and chips (diet and baked if you're still watching those calories).??These sandwiches create a larger audience for Subway, as they provide a low-fat alternative in fast food while still preserving the taste of a great sub. So run on over to Subway to try one of these inexpensive fresh tastes whether you are watching your weight or simply want to try a good new sandwich!
