Anti-war can be patriotic too

It never ceases to amaze how many narrow-minded citizens feel the need to take aim at and label anti-war protesters as unpatriotic.

Not since the Vietnam era of \America: Love it or Leave It"" has there been such a confluence of misdirected negative sentiment directed at a segment of the population that is actually showing just the opposite--great passion and concern for their country.

So much for lessons learned.

Why is it so hard for some people to understand the notion of supporting our troops by not wanting them put in harm's way?

Debate all you want about the threat posed by Hussein. The fact remains that the potential exists for thousands of casualties faced by both sides in a military conflict.

Also, there is nothing ""unpatriotic"" about believing that attacking Iraq will only greatly increase the terror threat to the United States by inflaming the already seething hatred that so much of the world harbors toward this country.

Contrary to what we'd all like to believe, terrorism cannot be defeated by military muscle. It only takes one person to make a bomb and detonate it in a crowded public place.

Ask anyone living in Israel how safe they feel as a result of their army's continued incursions into the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

It's time for us to learn that people can love and support our troops, our veterans and our country by opposing the war.
