Common myths floating around the halls

Take a letter, Maria. Address it to my Sex TA.

Has it already been four weeks? Good thing I arranged for you folks to do all of the work. Here are some stories that you all sent in describing sexual myths from your youth. Enjoy!

Dear Sex TA,

We always heard that if the guy 'pulled out' before he ejaculated, we wouldn't get pregnant. Lots of girls got pregnant as a result of that one. Guys also told us that they would be in pain if we got them all revved up and didn't let them have sex to release.

-Patchouli

Dear Patchouli,

Those are very common myths that float around the halls of high schools. I'm sure that you are right that the first has gotten more than a few young women pregnant. Pre-come that gathers on the head of the penis during ejaculation can have a small amount of sperm. This, and the fact that men don't always pull out in time, is why withdrawal is a poor method of birth control. As for the other classic guy lie (I am going to die from blue balls!), even if it were a real problem what would it mean? Men would be walking around with permanent erections? No. Fluids get reabsorbed into the body. Besides, as long as he's got at least one hand, it needn't be any concern of yours.

Dear Sex TA,

When I was a kid, I thought that my mom puked me up.

-Big Hugs

Dear Big Hugs,

You know, most of the time I figure that I emerged fully formed from my father's head. How could I have been part of something as seemingly mortal as a vaginal birth? Honestly though, when I was a kid, my mom told me that she went into the hospital, went through labor, and then (poof!) there I was. \NOVA's The Miracle of Life"" is actually a very interesting video and shows some actual birth footage.

Dear Sex TA,

In high school I did not have an actual sexual education teacher who taught our class but rather a nerdy gym teacher who was embarrassed to say ""testes."" Needless to say he gave a girl some horrible advice when it was ""ask anything about sex day."" The girl asked how she could or where she could go to get rid of pubic lice. He told her to put a little bleach on the infected area and if that didn't work to shave her infected area. No Joke!!

One of my boyfriends was known to be a straight up player. But he did not have the greatest sexual history. He was more of a taker and never a giver and he was adamant about not using condoms. One day when I was trying to have an open conversation about our sex life and my unhappiness in not being pleasured he tried to reassure me that it was better that way. He told me, ""Don't worry honey. It's better like this. You know if you don't have an orgasm you can't get pregnant."" After he told me that I broke up with him and his reputation as the ""minute man"" remained unbroken.

-Some people will say anything to get laid!

Dear SPWSATGL,

The first raises the unfortunate issue of training among high school sex educators. Most sex ed is taught by instructors for whom the subject is not their area of expertise. Many instructors get little to no training. The information he gave your friend is not only unhelpful but very dangerous! This is why it is important that sex education is treated as a bigger priority in our schools.

As for your second story, kudos to you for sticking up for your right to sexual pleasure!
