Folk rock singer-songwriter Rachael Sage sweeps through Madison this Sunday. Her newest album, Illusion's Carnival, displays her passion, style and musical grace. The Daily Cardinal recently spoke with Sage about her inspirations, musical beginnings and fashion.
Which musicians inspired you when you were young?
When I was really young, I was inspired by classical music. Later, Billy Joel and Elton John were on the radio, but there were not a lot of women on the radio when I was younger. Then it started to be Madonna and Blondie, which I liked, but it did not totally do it for me. As I got older a best friend of mine introduced me to Cat Stevens, Carole King and James Taylor.
Who or what influences you today in your songwriting?
I think my biggest influences in my songs are not really musical. I try to grasp as much as I can from what is going on around me in a cosmic sense and let it trickle down into song/story poems. My influences are a combination of how I perceive the world, what I read and what I witness as a friend. It is not my goal to reflect realism as much as the essence of realism.
How does fashion contribute to your image and performances?
I think it is the most playful aspect in my life. No matter how intense or manic I get in my musical or personal life, that is one area where I have fun. It is something I have always enjoyed and I can express my moods, individuality, and creativity. More than that, it is another canvas for me.
Anything else you would like to add?
Independent artists are incredibly supportive and genuine to me. We are all supportive towards each other. We are at a great time for independent artists.
