Lower costs for textbooks may be on the horizon for UW-Madison students. The Associated Students of Madison and UW administrators met Friday to discuss forming a commission to study alternatives to purchasing textbooks.
According to ASM Representative Erin Johnson, the meeting with UW-Madison Vice Chancellor Paul Barrows went well.
\He seemed very sympathetic with students on this issue. ... There was no conflict. It was very low-key,"" she said.
Barrows will talk to top UW-Madison administrators, and according to ASM representatives, a meeting will most likely be held in October, with a report detailing different options coming back sometime in February.
""It was a positive initiative on ASM's part. ... [I] will have a conversation with the [UW-Madison] Chancellor sometime next week,"" Barrows said.
Barrows said he would check with the other Big Ten universities to explore all available options.
""We use a lot of stuff online-is the bricks and mortar approach the best way to go?"" He said, ""Others have looked into this, and we can look to their wisdom.""
According to Johnson, exploring different approaches with an open mind is a good first step.
""We want to see all sides, what's feasible and what to expect,"" she said.
