Police crack down on bike violations

Madison police will start cracking down on bicyclists who break traffic laws next week, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Monday.

Police on bicycles will chase down offenders who run stop signs and ride the wrong way on one-way streets. State law requires cyclists to follow the same laws as motorists.

For example, night riders must have a front light visible from 500 feet and a two-inch rear reflector. The fine for not having this equipment can reach $62, according to police.

A recent survey by the city Department of Transportation showed only 20 percent of cyclists have proper equipment.
