On Sept. 26, The Daily Cardinal's report of Howard Dean's upcoming visit mentioned that Dean \opposes military involvement in Iraq"" [Pres. contender Dean to speak at Kohl].
I am very much opposed to the brutal war and ongoing occupation of Iraq, the combination of which have left almost all Iraqis in need of food aid and without adequate running water and electricity. Iraq is now governed by a United States-appointed Coalition Provisional Authority of 25 people with the United States' Paul Bremer holding veto power over all decisions. The record shows, however, that Dean does not ""oppose military involvement in Iraq."" Dean calls for an additional 40,000 to 50,000 troops to continue occupying Iraq.
Dean is really an opportunist-a moderate politician masquerading as a progressive. Dean himself told Salon, ""I don't mind being characterized as a liberal. I just don't happen to think it's true."" Progressives should not be fooled into thinking that Dean represents any opposition to Washington's war machine and should instead organize the kind of grassroots opposition that helped stop the war in Vietnam.
