The Wisconsin Union Directorate is hosting Indian-born author Salman Rushdie as part of its Distinguished Lecture Series at 7:30 tonight in the Orpheum Theater, 216 State St. Rushdie's most famous novel, \The Satanic Verses,"" led Iran to issue a fatwa sentencing him to death in 1988. Though Iran said it would no longer enforce the fatwa in 1998, Rushdie remains a relatively elusive figure, considering the $2.8 million reward for assassinating him.

The District of Columbia, local governments and a coalition of 12 states sued the Environmental Protection Agency Monday for trying to change regulations of the federal Clean Air Act, arguing that only Congress has the authority to make changes in the act. 

 

 

 

According to the states, the new rules will weaken national air pollution restrictions by allowing coal-fired power plants and oil refineries to release more pollution.  

 

 

 

These revisions became final after appearing in the Federal Register today. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Students and others can give their input on plans for a proposed State Street-area parking ramp at a forum tonight in the Marquee Room of the Madison Civic Center, 211 State St.  

 

 

 

The parking ramp would go in the existing Buckeye parking lot next to Pizzeria Uno, 222 W. Gorham St., but three houses between the existing lot and Lisa Link Peace Park would have to be torn down to make way for the new structure.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At Monday's meeting, Student Services Finance Committee Chair Aaron Werner announced Josh Petit's resignation from the committee. 

 

 

 

After already pushing back the decision for a week due to an employee illness, the remaining 11 members again tabled the decision to adjust the budget for Safe Arrival For Everyone until Wednesday. 

 

 

 

SSFC also granted the newly formed UW Roman Catholics $52,210 of the $170,203 they requested. Additionally, they funded the Rape Crisis Center with all of the $40,050 they asked for. 

 

 

 

Wednesday, SSFC will determine funding for Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment and Polygon, an organization for College of Engineering students.
