Next spring, a deeply offensive version of the Passion of Christ is being performed here in Madison. It is important for the student body to join in denouncing this blasphemous theatrical, entitled \Corpus Christi.""
In a modern rendition of the death of Jesus, he is portrayed as a homosexual who has sexual trysts with his 12 gay disciples. He is subsequently crucified for being the ""king of the queers."" More particularly, the production lashes out at Catholicism every chance it gets.
The traditional Christian belief is that homosexuality is gravely immoral, and Jesus Christ was free from all sin. ""Corpus Christi"" makes a mockery of our religious beliefs and our God. The production is also offensive to Muslims, since Islam accepts Jesus as one of its five great prophets, free from sin.
""Corpus Christi"" is being produced by StageQ and will run in March 2004 at the Bartell Community Theatre. It is important that students unite to condemn this profoundly anti-Christian production. While these groups have a legal right to perform the play, it is nevertheless terribly insulting to countless Christians. Those of all religious faiths should write or call StageQ and the Bartell Community Theater and voice their concerns over this blasphemous project.
There will be peaceful protests next spring if the production is released, and I hope the student body will join the protests and denounce this greatly offensive theatrical.
