Questions remain about Bush, bin Laden

After the attacks in 2001 on the eastern part of the United States, President Bush said the United States will make no distinction between those who plan terrorist attacks and those who harbor terrorists.??A bold statement like this brings up important questions about how much the Bush family, the FBI and the CIA have done to encourage terrorism.

Beginning in the early 1980s, the CIA funded training of Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group to fight the U.S.S.R. In September 2001, bin Laden, a CIA-trained terrorist, was accused of planning terrorist attacks in the eastern United States.??Was this attack simply caused by his \hatred of America"" or was there some other more specific grudge that motivated the attack?

In the early 1990s, the current President Bush owned a struggling oil company in Texas called Harken. The financial troubles were solved when a Saudi businessman decided to invest money in Harken and offer them prestigious drilling contracts in the Persian Gulf.??The Wall Street Journal reported Dec. 9, 1991, ""Khalid bin Majfouz helps keep Bush Jr.'s company Harken from financial troubles.""??

On Dec. 10, 2001, the Boston Herald reported, ""Evidence that members of the Saudi families-headed by patriarchs Khalid bin Majfouz and Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi-have had ties to Islamic charities and companies linked financially to bin Laden's al Qaeda organization.""

During the first Gulf War, why was a struggling Texas oil company given lucrative contracts to drill in the Persian Gulf' Does it have anything to do with the owner being the son of the then-president of the United States'Should there be concern over the fact that President Bush is currently searching for those connected to terrorism, when those very same people once helped save his oil company from financial ruin?

As of Sept. 11, 2001, members of both the Bush and bin Laden families owned part of the Carlyle Group. The Carlyle Group is a Washington D.C.-based company that is one of the world's leading weapons manufacturers.??

On Oct. 31, 2001, The Guardian reported, ""Carlyle has become the thread which indirectly links American military policy in Afghanistan to the personal financial fortunes of its celebrity employees, not least the current president's father (Bush (41)).??Among the firm's multi-million-dollar investors were members of the family of Osama bin Laden.""?? Are members of a terrorist's family guilty of harboring a terrorist in the same way a country is in which a terrorist resides'If the U.S. government is looking for Osama bin Laden, how much help have they received from the bin Laden family of which they apparently know very well?

The existence of a connection between the Bush and bin Laden families is clearly shown with the fact that George Bush Sr. on at least two separate occasions visited the bin Laden family in Saudi Arabia.??

On Oct. 31, 2001, The Guardian reported, ""The first President Bush is understood to have visited the bin Ladens in Saudi Arabia twice on the firm's behalf.""??

On September 20, 2001, the Boston Globe reported, ""Boston-area relatives of Osama bin Laden, the Saudi-born terrorist who stands accused of masterminding last week's suicide hijackings, flew back to Saudi Arabia in the last two days."" The article goes on to say that the plane with the members of the bin Laden family, along with ""more than 20 Saudi citizens"" has flown home out of Boston's Logan Airport with the approval of the FBI.??Why was the U.S. government in a hurry to have these people leave the country' Were they concerned for its safety, or was there some other reason?

These questions are among many that remain unanswered in the aftermath of Sept. 11. If we are so concerned with preserving freedom and fighting terrorism, then these are questions that need to be answered. In Bush's State of the Union address in 2002 he said, ""After America was attacked, it was as if our entire country looked into a mirror and saw our better selves.""?? Perhaps it is time to take another look in that mirror and try to better see just what we are really doing.
