The signature of President George W. Bush is all that is required to ban the procedure conservative activists call \partial-birth abortion."" As this is all but a formality, it is in no way premature to bestow upon elected officials the indignation their complicancy warrants.
The topic of this abortion procedure is a slippery slope among both liberals and conservatives. Many are ignorant in regards to it and apathy is ever present. In an attempt to clear up some of the vague areas, a Republican congressional committee studied the topic and came to the conclusion that this abortion procedure is never necessary to preserve the health of a woman. Such negligence is unconscionable at best. Based on what is obviously skewed and/or faulty intelligence, our government has gone through with this controversial measure (sound familiar?) that will put the lives of myriad women at risk.
When this ban becomes law it will take a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to remedy it. In order for a case to even be brought to our highest court of justice, however, an incident needs to happen that brings the law into question. The court may not grant standing until a woman's life is in danger.
The fact of the matter is abortions of this nature are rare. The cases when a woman requires this process are rare, which brings up the question of why the government believed it necessary to take action in the first place.
This abortion procedure does not happen often and is not a form of birth control, contrary to the statements of many conservatives who require such arguments to offset their own inability to present their point.
In reality, the condemnation of this abortion procedure is groundless. It is simply the next in a line of phantom threats the Republican administration has fed the public. Even more ridiculous than this uncommon issue garnering federal intervention is the dialogue that made it so. The predominantly male powers-that-be have once again displayed their ineptitude by deciding what is right for women. Furthermore, they have, in effect, placed a greater value on the life of the fetus than the life of the woman. Who are these contemptuous egoists to make a decision of such caliber?
The reason for this act is fairly obvious: it is another step toward taking down Roe v. Wade. Our Republican regime has long desired to rid the country of abortion and this is simply the first stepping stone on the path. While the first instinct of many liberals will be to overlook this abortion procedure ban and put it aside in silent disapproval, such a course of action cannot be allowed. Every bit of apathy helps the Bush administration get closer to the day when Roe v. Wade is a memory; every time we let their improper legislation pass unopposed, the strength of abortion rights diminishes.
The government is out of line in passing legislation on something they have no business dealing with, and those who ignore their subtle chess moves in the short term should prepare for repercussions in the long term.
