Soul's 'Stories' exceeds expectations

(Rhymesayers/Fat Beats)

With the recent solo success of both artists, along with a well-regarded six-track teaser EP out already, Blueprint and RJD2's newest release was quite anticipated. The pairing of Blueprint's endowed mic presence and RJD2's vivid, thick production is one that naturally created high expectations. Needless to say, met and exceeded all of them.

Over the course of the album, Blueprint tackles a series of issues that all relate to the struggle of living. And on every different track, RJD2 perfectly matches the emotion and purpose of Blueprint's lyrics with beats that accentuate the theme of the song. A good example of this is \Run,"" where Blueprint discusses how people ""run from anything that threatens peaceful existence"" over a sinister string sample that captures the idea of those who run from life nicely.

Another sample of Soul Position's chemistry is ""Look of Pain,"" where 'hood tales about youths' dreams quickly vanishing are spit over a thumping electric guitar sound. The best display of themed lyrics and beats blending together, though, is ""Share This."" The song begins with Blueprint talking about his life and why he thinks he is rapping, while high hats and a string loop prepare to pounce. As the lyrics get more energetic and poignant, the beat progresses with added sounds and more force until it explodes into an upbeat, triumphant trumpet-led ensemble.

But between the serious topics discussed in is a bit of lighthearted fun. In a series of ""Candyland"" interludes, Blueprint creates nostalgia by reciting lists of objects and events from his childhood. From cartoons to candy, Blueprint uses the short tracks to contrast with the often grim reality of life displayed in the other songs. ""The Jerry Springer Episode"" is one of his hilarious looks at a tumultuous relationships where he finds it necessary to seek petty acts of revenge against his woman.

With an incredible chemistry, engaging lyrics, exceptional production and an album overflowing with quality, Blueprint and RJD2 have struck gold with . If justice is served, they will strike platinum as well.
