MLB Playoffs
The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees Monday night 3-2, bouncing back from Saturday's loss and evening the series at two games apiece.
Behind the arm of knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, the three runs eked out by the Red Sox were all that was needed to beat the Bronx Bombers and hand Yankee ace Mike Mussina his third straight playoff loss.
In what was a pitching duel from start to finish, Wakefield tallied his second victory of the series, allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out eight in seven innings. Mussina, on the other hand, continued to leave his pitches high in the zone. He gave up six hits and three earned runs in six and two-thirds innings. Although the Yankee starter struck out ten in his outing, he did give up two home runs, something very uncharacteristic of the regular-season Mussina.
Boston struck first in the game as second baseman Todd Walker connected on a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning. After an RBI double by Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter in the top-half of the fifth, Boston's Trot Nixon hit his own solo shot in the bottom half to reclaim the lead for good for the Red Sox.
WCHA honors freshmen
It was a successful week for Badger hockey as both the men's and women's squads had one of their own named Western Collegiate Hockey Association rookie of the week.
UW freshman forward Meaghan Mikkelson had a memorable debut Friday night as the No. 6 Badgers defeated Vermont 2-0 at the Kohl Center. Mikkelson scored the first Wisconsin goal of the season on a power play in the third period.
The next night Mikkelson helped punish Vermont again, scoring another goal and helping the Badgers to a 7-0 victory.
Mikkelson, who played on Canada's under-22 national team, is now tied for the team lead in goals with two.
The men's team cannot claim the same success as the women, but had a good weekend at the Maverick Stampede, skating to a 1-1 record. Freshman center Andrew Joudrey claimed his WCHA Rookie of the Week honor after tallying three points in two games.
In the opening contest against Nebraska-Omaha, Joudrey scored a go-ahead goal and assisted on another score in a 4-3 overtime win.
The next night was not as successful, as Wisconsin dropped the tournament championship to Maine 6-2. Joudrey, however, still produced and came away with an assist, making him Wisconsin's scoring leader after their first two games.
Joudrey was drafted last spring by NHL's Washington Capitals.
