Letter to the Editor

In response to the article \Primate center faces investigation for deaths,"" (11/5/03) I concur with Mr. Budkie's remarks. As a UW alumnus and former student at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, I have witnessed research and procedures here that were stressful for the monkeys. What happens behind closed doors would sicken and shock the students and faculty of UW-Madison: metal caps exposing monkey's brains, animals forced to sit unnaturally in chairs for hours on end, gruesome brain surgeries. Sadly, the list goes on.

I used to believe animal research was a necessary evil; after working in three primate labs, I came to the conclusion it was simply evil.
