Approximately 90 percent of Wisconsin sheriffs would ask their county boards to let them opt out of issuing concealed weapons permits under a proposed weapons bill, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Monday.
The conceal and carry bill must still go through a second run in the state Senate before it hits Gov. Jim Doyle's desk, although the governor has said he would veto it.
If the bill did become law, citizens could carry concealed weapons in certain areas, including university grounds, provided they pass a background check by a county sheriff. A two-thirds vote on a county board would allow a sheriff to opt out of providing the background checks.
Jeff Wiswell, a spokesperson for Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association, said as many as 65 of the 72 counties' sheriffs want to opt out because they do not have enough personnel to do the checks.
\It's ridiculous in the extreme to think that we would do a simple computer check on a concealed weapons application,"" Wiswell said.
