Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed a bill Friday defining marriage as between one man and one woman, saying the Wisconsin Supreme Court already prohibits same-sex marriage, according to The Capital Times.
The state Senate voted 22-10 to pass the bill, and Assembly leaders brought it immediately to Doyle's desk after passing it 68-29.
State Rep. Mark Gundrum, R-New Berlin, criticized Doyle's move, saying he could advance same-sex marriages. Doyle said Wisconsin should focus on the economy and health care instead.
The state Legislature needs two-thirds majority vote in each house to override a veto, 22 Senate votes and 66 Assembly votes.
A powerful car bomb exploded early Sunday morning in a housing compound in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, killing at least two people and injuring dozens, according to U.S. and Saudi authorities.
The bombing came one day after the United States closed its embassy and two consulates in the oil-rich kingdom because of intelligence indicating that terrorists plotting attacks were moving from planning to an operational phase, U.S. and Saudi authorities said.
Within hours of Sunday's bombing, Saudi officials were speculating al Qaeda activists or sympathizers were responsible. In an audio tape released one month ago, the Saudi-born bin Laden called for a new wave of attacks against American and Western targets.
Madison police released more details last week about 28 people accused of serious offenses on Halloween, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
Five of the 28 said they go to UW-Madison. Two said they were students but did not specify where.
Police also said 308 people received citations for more minor offenses like underage drinking, fake IDs and violating the glass ban.
An incomplete list of those cited showed 54 people said which school they attend. Thirteen were from UW-Madison, 16 were from other Wisconsin schools and 12 were from Minnesota schools.
