Letter to the Editor

On an otherwise normal day in June, National Public Radio provided a reason for me to hope for this country again.??On that day, I first heard about General Wesley Clark and the possibility that he would run for President of the United States.??And since that day, General Clark has been the only choice I have had for the highest office in the land.

Wesley Clark's background represents the diversity of his talents and experiences. From the master's degrees in philosophy, politics and economics he received while a Rhodes Scholar to his military experience in Vietnam, Kosovo and Latin America to being chairman of the board at WaveCrest Laboratories, General Clark is the paragon of the modern Renaissance Man.??However, accolades alone do not make a person a valid candidate for president; vision does.

\New American Patriotism"" defines what General Clark and his supporters passionately believe to be the correct path for the future of the United States.??""New American Patriotism"" comprises a belief that as citizens of this nation, we have rights in addition to our responsibilities. Americans have the right of reproductive freedom, the right to a clean environment and the right to oppose a standing administration.??

But our responsibilities are just as important.??We have a responsibility to promote commerce and industry but not to allow environmental degradation-domestically or internationally.??We have a responsibility to make our public schools the best in the world by making teacher quality and classroom size our top priorities. We have a responsibility to make sure that every man and woman, regardless of ethnicity, race or sexual preference, has a fair chance to prosper in today's society.

In February, Wisconsin voters will participate in one of the first presidential primaries in the nation and will be crucial in deciding who the Democratic nominee for President of the United States will be.??Because of his diverse and extensive experiences in many aspects of life, General Wesley Clark will be my choice for president and I hope he will be yours too.
