Softball takes ASU Louisville Slugger Classic by storm 

 

 

 

With the exception of a 4-0 shutout loss to host Arizona State, UW (6-4) had a stellar weekend as the Badgers won four of the five games at the ASU Louisville Slugger Classic. 

 

 

 

Freshman pitcher Katie Layne picked up her first win of her Badger career against No. 17 Iowa, 6-3. Layne gave up 12 hits, four walks and recorded four strikeouts in seven innings.

Following UW's loss to ASU, senior outfielder Diana Consolmagno hit a grand slam as UW beat Utah State 7-1. The Badgers went on to beat Illinois State back-to-back 2-1 and 8-0. In UW's shutout win, the team notched six runs in the second inning and freshman pitcher Eden Brock recorded her first career shutout. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Women's swimming takes fourth at conference meet 

 

 

 

The No. 9 Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team took fourth place at the Big Ten Championships this weekend. Michigan won the conference title, with Penn State and Indiana rounding out the top three spots. 

 

 

 

\I know that we didn't leave our best meet here and I know that our athletes going [to the NCAA championships] are going to swim incredibly,"" Wisconsin Head Coach Eric Hansen said. ""I'm more excited about the NCAAs than I thought I'd be."" 

 

 

 

Senior Bethany Pendleton was named Big Ten swimmer of the year and swimmer of the meet, while Junior Carly Piper won the 1650-meter freestyle title for the third straight year. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lady Badgers holds off Indiana at home 

 

 

 

Wisconsin sophomore forward Jordan Wilson put up 24 points and 10 rebounds and senior center Emily Ashbaugh had 16 points and eight rebounds as the Badgers held off Indiana 66-62 Sunday at the Kohl Center. 

 

 

 

""Our kids really wanted this one,"" Wisconsin Head Coach Lisa Stone said. ""All we ran was a simple quick hit [offense] and Jordan inside is what made it work. I'm very proud of her. She made the big shots in a timely manner."" 

 

 

 

Turnovers kept the game close as Wisconsin turned the ball over 10 times in the second half. With a 10 point lead with under five minutes to play, Indiana went on a 13-5 run to pull the game to 64-62. However, Indiana was not able to finish off the comeback.
