Associated Students of Madison representatives will send letters in opposition of a two-tier minimum wage system in which people under 18 and new employees will have a lower minimum wage than their adult coworkers. 

 

 

 

ASM representatives voted Thursday to forward the letters to Gov. Jim Doyle and Madison Democratic state Reps. Mark Pocan and Spencer Black and state Sen. Fred Risser, who are currently considering implementing the two-tier system.

Some representatives said it reflects age discrimination and will lead to employers favoring younger workers who they can pay less. 

 

 

 

Additionally, ASM representatives voted to support the Teaching Assistants Association's efforts to receive a pay increase and maintain a zero premium health-care plan. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

UW-River Falls Chancellor Ann Lydecker died in a car accident near River Falls Wednesday morning. 

 

 

 

Lydecker died at the scene of the accident around 6:40 a.m. as a result of injuries suffered. The accident involved two vehicles, Lydecker's car and a pickup. 

 

 

 

UW System President Katharine Lyall said Lydecker \was an inspirational and energetic leader, but as important, she was a warm and supportive colleague and friend to us all. She will be deeply missed."" 

 

 

 

Lydecker, 59, took office in 2000 as the school's first woman chief executive.  

 

 

 

""Ann was a remarkable individual who was passionate about her work, shaping the future for the students of her campus. Her legacy will be with the university and the campus for many years to come,"" she said. 

 

 

 

Ginny Combs, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW-River Falls, will serve as interim chancellor. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A new audiotape attributed to Osama bin Laden's top deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri encourages Pakisanis to overthrow President Pervez Musharraf, CNN.com reported. 

 

 

 

""Every Muslim in Pakistan must do his or her best in getting rid of this government, which cooperates with the enemies,"" the speaker on the tape said.  

 

 

 

Al Jazeera, the Arabic news network, broadcast the taped statement Thursday. 

 

 

 

In the tape, the speaker calls on Pakistani tribes to resist government forces sent to search for al Qaeda fighters and to fight government troops, according to CNN.com. 

 

 

 

""These tribes, which defended Islam throughout all of its history, will not give up to one slave of America,"" the speaker said. 

 

 

 

The voice on the tape condemns Musharraf, calling him a traitor and a ""Muslim assassin,"" CNN.com reported. 

 

 

 

There was no independent confirmation that the voice on the tape was Zawahiri, al Qaeda's no. 2 figure. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Two armed men robbed three victims on the 200 block of S. Bedford St. in the early morning hours Wednesday, according 

 

 

 

to a press release.  

 

 

 

Two 18 and 19-year old males and a 19-year-female were approached by two black, male suspects when one of the suspects showed a silver handgun and demanded money. 

 

 

 

The two suspects, approximately 21-years-old, took the wallets and purse of the victims and fled on foot. 

 

 

 

After police arrived and conducted a search, the suspects were not found. A police investigation is continuing.
