Badger Bits

Wisconsin (3-5 Big Ten, 21-19 overall) split two double headers against Northwestern (2-6, 18-14 overall) Michigan State (3-5, 21-16 overall) this weekend.

The first game against Northwestern went into extra innings before UW escaped with a 4-2 victory in Evanston, Ill. Neither team had a particularly effective game, stranding more than 10 runners on base each.

Northwestern put it together Saturday, shutting out Wisconsin 4-0. Northwestern freshman pitcher Eileen Canney tossed her sixth shutout of the 2004 campaign, giving up six hits, one walk and striking out 10.

UW got out of East Lansing Sunday with a .500 record against the Spartans. The first game of the double header was, again, not pretty for either team. As both teams gave up four errors each, Michigan State found their offense in the bottom half of the third inning, scoring all seven of their runs on seven hits, beating UW 7-2.

In the second game on the double header, Michigan State was up 6-0 in the third inning, yet UW pulled it together and squeaked out an 11-8 victory. Senior catcher Boo Gillette was able the ball clearly, going 4-for-4 and batted in a school record six RBIs.
