News Briefs

Only one day after President Bush received a pre-Sept. 11 memo on al Qaeda's effort to strike in the United States, senior government officials received a similar briefing that excluded information about current threats and investigations, federal officials said, according to The Associated Press.

Officials said Monday the senior executive intelligence brief, sent Aug. 7, 2001, did not reference the 70 FBI investigations of possible al Qaeda activity that were included in the memo Bush received the day before entitled, \Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.,"" The Associated Press reported.

According to a recent Badger Poll, a majority of Wisconsin residents support a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages, but there is less support for an amendment that would also ban same-sex civil unions, reported The Capital Times.

Sixty-four percent surveyed supported an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and 53 percent supported excluding same-sex couples from civil unions.

This information could be important when the state Legislature takes up the proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage next year.

""Clearly, an amendment that focuses on marriage would gain support more easily,"" Badger Poll director G. Donald Ferree Jr. told The Capital Times.

Police are investigating the disappearance of a UW-La Crosse student who was last seen early Saturday morning outside a downtown bar, according to The Associated Press.

Jared P. Dion, 21, was with friends until approximately 2:30 a.m. Police Sgt. Roger Barnes told The Associated Press his friends got on a bus and thought Dion was with them, but when they turned around, he was gone.

Police have labeled the case a ""possible missing person"" and suspect no foul play.

UW-La Crosse faculty and students have been e-mailed details.
