Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno spoke Wednesday to the UW-Madison Law School in a lecture entitled, \National Security, Civil Liberties and Sentencing.""
Reno will testify before the Avery Task Force at the State Capitol today to discuss police and prosecution investigation practices in wrongful conviction cases, according to the Wisconsin Bar Association. The task force is designed to examine the criminal justice system and provide insight into wrongful conviction cases.
Phil Certain, Dean of the College of Letters and Science, promised Associated Students of Madison interns he would make academic departments announce changes in curricula via e-mail to declared majors or postings on department Web sites.
ASM Academic Affairs Intern Ashok Kumar said departments have eliminated many classes in recent semesters and thought students should know of eliminations, changes in professors and new courses so they can plan ahead.
Departments will post changes on their Web sites and some will send e-mails, Kumar said.
Though Provost Peter Spear supplied ASM representatives with the number of recent course changes, he refused to allow representatives to see the list of which courses were cut, Kumar said.
Kumar added this information is public record and there exists the potential to sue the university if it continues to withhold it. He said representatives will continue trying to obtain the information and will push for other departments to disclose curriculum changes.
