Wisconsin junior running back Dwayne Smith will no longer be able to play football due to a medical condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyapathy. The disorder, generally characterized by an enlargement of the heart muscle and a thickening of the walls in the left ventricle, was discovered by a preseason physical exam.
Smith played in all 13 games last season, making six starts, and led all Badgers with 857 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. For his efforts he was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the conference's coaches.
Smith participated in just one practice at the beginning of August before being sidelined.
