Men's soccer earns split at Coca-Cola Panther Classic
The Badger men's soccer team (2-2-0) finished the weekend 1-1, falling to Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon before rebounding to upset No. 20 Tulsa Sunday.
Wisconsin failed to score on Saturday as it was defeated 3-0 at the hands of Penn. Sunday was a different story as the team got two goals from freshman midfielder Reid Johnson on its way to a 3-2 victory. Senior goalkeeper Eric Hanson also played a key role in the game. He made 10 saves and was named goaltending MVP of the tournament.
The tournament also featured UW-Milwaukee. All four teams finished the weekend with a 1-1 record, but Tulsa was given the title because it scored the most total goals for the weekend.
Volleyball finishes 2-1 at Jayhawk Invitational
The No. 25 Wisconsin volleyball team won two of three matches at the Jayhawk Invitational this weekend. The Badgers opened up play on Friday night in convincing fashion, knocking off Denver in three straight games, 30-25, 30-21, 30-19. Senior outside hitter Marian Weidner led UW with 17 kills and junior outside hitter Aubrey Meierotto recorded a match-high 19 digs to go along with her two aces. Head Coach Pete Waite saw a solid contribution from freshman libero Jocelyn Wack, who made 11 saves in Friday night's victory.
The Badgers could not manage the same result Saturday night as they were ousted by an undefeated Kansas Jayhawk squad, 30-21, 30-26, 29-31, 30-22. UW stayed close in games two and four, as game two saw 12 ties in the early going and game four saw seven ties early on. Kansas had five players with double figures in kills and had 15 blocks to UW's seven. Junior middle blocker Sheila Shaw led Wisconsin with 20 kills and freshman middle blocker Taylor Reineke added 10. Wack had a career-high 17 digs for UW.
The weekend concluded with a Wisconsin victory against Rhode Island, 30-28, 21-30, 30-20, 30-20. Shaw hit a match-high .455 and led Wisconsin with 18 kills, while senior outside hitter Jill Odenthal tied a career high with five blocks. Waite saw more contribution from the freshman class as Wack broke her career high with 22 digs, and setter Jackie Simpson had 52 assists.
Men's, women's cross country finish second
Juniors Bobby Lockhart and Ben Gregory finished first and second, respectively, as the Badgers finished second as a team at the Hawkeye Invitational. Lockhart finished with a time of 25 minutes, 10 seconds--12 seconds ahead of Gregory. Iowa edged out the Badgers by one point to take the title.
The UW women's cross-country team finished second at the Crusader Invitational on Friday. Badger sophomore Katrina Rundhaug finished first individually while sophomore A Havahla Haynes came in second.
