James named Defensive Player of the Week
Senior defensive end Erasmus James was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the conference Monday.
James had five tackles, four of them solo tackles, two sacks netting a loss of 25 total yards, a pass break-up and one forced fumble in Wisconsin's win over Arizona last weekend.
James is part of a Badger defense which held the Wildcats to just 199 total yards and has limited opposing offenses to just one touchdown through the first three games.
James now has 13 tackles on the season, including eight solo tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. He also has three sacks and three quarterback hurries this year, after redshirting last season due to injury.
It is the second week in a row that a Badger has been honored as a Big Ten Player of the Week, as senior safety Jim Leonhard was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week just one week ago.
Daniels' catch nominated for award
Owen Daniels' fourth-down catch on the Badgers' game winning drive of their 9-7 victory over Arizona Saturday is one of four plays nominated by ESPN this week in its weekly \Game Changing Performances.""
The catch is now part of fan voting at espn.com/pontiac as one of college football's plays of the week. If Daniels' play wins the contest, UW will receive a $5,000 contribution to the general scholarship fund.
However, athletic officials announced Monday that if the play should win the contest, the contribution would go to one lucky student. Should the play win, officials would draw one random name for that student to use toward the payment of their education. The winning student would be recognized at the Oct. 2 game against Illinois.
UW, Illinois scheduled for 1 p.m. start
The Oct. 2 game between Illinois and Wisconsin has been scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
The Big Ten conference announced Monday morning that there will be no live television broadcast for the game. However, the regularly scheduled, tape-delayed broadcast will be shown on Wisconsin Public Television at 10 p.m.
""I just found out about [not having a live television broadcast] before I came down here,"" Head Coach Barry Alvarez said at a weekly Monday news conference. ""It was surprising to me.""
It was unclear Monday afternoon just how the Big Ten's replay system would work due to the lack of television.
""I would guess we'll have some [cameras],"" Alvarez said. ""Even the rebroadcast will have some cameras in there. I don't know what you can do with our replay board, whether you could use [that], but I'm sure we could get something. We'll have something arranged.""
""I know the conference is working on maintaining the ability to do replay for that game still,"" Director of Athletic Communications Brian Doherty added.
