After closing out the season with a 5-1 record, the UW men's rugby club team has been selected to play in the Collegiate Rugby National Championship Tournament. In fact, the team is set to host the Wisconsin Regional this weekend.
The Regional will open Saturday with the Badgers taking on Marquette and UW-Stout taking on UW-Milwaukee. The two winners will then play each other Sunday.
\It should be a really hard match. They're a team that's getting bumped up from a lower tier to come play. So we aren't familiar with them,"" said Ryan Meyer, president of the UW rugby football club.
Wisconsin did not face Marquette in the regular season, as it is not a Division I team. The team got into the tournament on an at-large bid after dominating the regular season. Marquette has scored 205 points this season while giving up just 30.
Should the Badgers advance to the regional final, they would face a team they have previously beaten already this year. They topped UW-Milwaukee 36-26 and earlier shut out UW-Stout 28-0.
Should Wisconsin win twice this weekend to advance, it would most likely hold the next round of the tournament next weekend.
This weekend's games will take place at the UW Rugby field, at the intersection of University Bay Drive and Oxford Road, at the northwest corner of the University Athletic Fields. Admission is free of charge.
