Yesterday's Alcohol License Review Committee meeting served up many items for discussion. Perhaps the most appealing of these for UW students is the proposed Performing Arts Venue License, which enables those 18 and older to enjoy musical events at nightclub establishments. While it still remains a proposal, the committee's mention of ASM's petition for this license, which contains about 500 signatures, will count in their final decision.
Also in the proposal stage is the new committee position of alcohol policy coordinator, whose exact training and duties remain in question.
Another important resolution was the aboltion of the cabaret license. This license was required for establishments to provide their patrons with music, dancing and entertainment. However, the committee still required nightclubs with dance floors that cover 200 square feet to obtain a license. They also concluded dancing on bars is prohibited.
The committee spent most of its evening screening requests for licenses from restaurants and bars. Among them were a Mexican restaurant, a neighborhood liquor store and a wine-tasting room.
The committee's objections postponed the wine-tasting establishment and the neighborhood liquor store to the next meeting because more specialized cases need to be further refined.
Also discussed was a liquor license disciplinary strategy, concerning those nightclubs which defy statutes. According to Ald. Warren Onken, District 3, this should be handled simplistically.
\If they're a bad operator, they shouldn't have a license-that's the slam dunk,"" Onken said.
